Fun through Discipline

Like you, I’m having the time of my life!  To watch Agel grow is extremely satisfying personally and professionally.  Meeting with you, I continue to be impressed with the desire, drive, and determination that make you great.  I have absolute faith in you and your ability to double your business in the next six months.

How exactly are we going to do that?  We just need an unyielding focus on that goal, a lot of work, and a disciplined effort.  What I just said may not sound like a lot of fun.  But, I’m here to tell you that’s exactly what we aim to do; have a lot of fun along the way.

Self discipline.  The term itself probably conjures up images of sacrifice, denial, and even pain.  But the exact opposite is true.  If you look closely at any self-disciplined person you know, you will discover they are probably the happiest individuals on earth.  Why?  They have learned to focus on the JOY of completing a task and on the rewards of staying the course until the fulfillment of personal goals and desires.  Yes, this discipline takes sacrifice, and sacrifice usually is not fun.  But the self-disciplined focus remains on the pleasure and rewards of an activity, whether those rewards come immediately or years down the road.

In his audio series entitled The Science of Self Discipline, Dr. Kerry Johnson provides some powerful tools to help us overcome procrastination and live a more self-disciplined life.  First, he teaches the need to “reframe” our perceptions about those tasks you know you should do, but feel fearful or hesitant about.  Most of us have had the experience where we have to put off a task for so long that the pain of NOT doing it has become greater than the pain of following through.   And, once the task was complete, perhaps you realized that it was not only less difficult than you thought, but maybe a little fun at the same time!

By reframing a task, you simply change how you picture it in your mind.  Tasks we like to put off are usually viewed in our minds in dark, gray tones accompanied with a feeling of fear or anxiety.  You can “reframe” that picture by making it brighter, bigger and even adding your favorite color or music to the experience in your mind.  Also, you need to be careful how you talk about these tasks.  Instead of thinking or saying, “I have to get two people for a PBR to hit my goals,” reframe these thoughts as, “I GET to find two new people for a PBR.”

Another excellent way to overcome fear is to ask yourself, “What is the worst that could happen?”  If someone turns you down, ask “then what?”  Keep yourself asking “then what” until you start to see that the worst that could happen usually isn’t as terrifying as you originally thought.  And even if it did not happen as you imagined, you would still survive.  Then ask yourself, “What will happen if I DON’T do it?”  This exercise is a great way to focus on how you interpret what happens to you.

Most of us don’t realize the power we have to control our thoughts and attitudes.  You truly are an “agent unto yourself” and have been given the power to choose, not only what you will do, but what you will focus on and how you will interpret what happens to you. I challenge you to start from this moment on to “reframe” your whole world.  Create a “dream board” of images representing what you want this business to do for you.  Look at it every morning and evening.  Include photos and graphics that will help you visualize your success in bright, powerful colors.  I challenge you to be a part of President’s Club.

Take your focus off the pain and put it on the pleasure of attaining these goals.  In doing this, you will soon find joy in completing even the smallest accomplishment.  Go ahead and hand out those two CD’s or make those 10 phone calls a day and don’t be afraid to award yourself freely as you reach these little goals.  These seemingly insignificant actions will add up and you will soon see just how fun (and easy) it is to enroll your two people a week as you “rethink your thoughts” and focus on the fun!
